<p>Boschmann und his team made seven young women and seven young men drink half a liter (about 2 glasses) of water on an empty stomach in the morning. As a a result, their body energy conversion increased by about 30 percent, and this effect lasted about 60 to 90 minutes, the doctor explained, which resulted in an additional energy consumption of about 25 calories. When drinking 1.5 to 2 liters of water (about half a gallon) every day an additional 100 calories are consumed.</p>
<p>The explanation: Drinking water dilutes the blood in the short term, according to Boschmann. This triggers a reflex in the liver. And this reflex in turn activates the sympathetic nervous system that prepares our bodies for physical and mental performance, and consumes energy in the process.</p>
<p>Boschmann therefore recommends drinking a glass of water between meals. &#8220;Ordinary tap water is sufficient,&#8221; he says. Ginger or other additives, that would &#8216;warm&#8217; the water are not necessary. The thermogenic, meaning calorie-consuming potential, can&#8217;t be infinitely accelerated.</p>
<p>Consequentially, the physician suggests to drink a half liter of water in winter per day (2 glasses) and in the summer two to three liters (up to 3/4 of a gallon). &#8220;The body constantly needs water  to run smoothly,&#8221; Boschmann explains further.</p>

<p>After struggling with my weight for the most part of my life, I don&#8217;t count calories anymore &#8211; I eat yummy healthy food that keeps my weight naturally down when I eat reasonable amounts. No more <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoyo_Diet" style="color:#333" >yoyo diets</a>, no more weight roller-coaster! And yes, I have a chocolate bar or ice cream when I crave it. </p>
<p>Now, I may gain a pound or two, but it&#8217;s gone two days later. After a day of &#8216;pigging out&#8217; I&#8217;m not that hungry the next morning, and I naturally eat less. It&#8217;s incredible how smart your body can balance your weight when you mainly eat healthy tasty food you really like! Back in the days, I was constantly starving myself, trying out one diet after another, losing ten or fifteen pounds, going happily back to normal life and &#8211; packing it all back on&#8230; It was incredibly frustrating to say the least. I mean, everyone tells you that the secret to losing weight is diet and exercise, right? And that&#8217;s exactly what I did. The problem was that only worked as long as I was depriving myself. And here I was again, munching on a celery stick while I was craving chocolate. Who can do this for long? </p>
<p><strong>Looking back, here is the biggest mistake I made:</strong> I stuffed myself with bad food. I bought so called &#8220;diet food&#8221; because I thought it would help me lose weight. Low carbs, artificial sweetener, substitute butter, <a href="http://lowfatcooking.about.com/od/faqs/f/hydrogenated.htm" style="color:#333">trans-fat</a> free shortening. Guess what? Even when a 90 calories granola bar hits your system, it turns into sugar and your body stores it as fat because it doesn&#8217;t need more sugar! And to be clear: just because something says trans-fat-free on the label doesn&#8217;t mean it is low fat. A tablespoon of trans-fat free shortening still contains 110 calories. Not to mention all the &#8216;bad stuff&#8217; I was putting in my system without knowing, like high fructose corn syrup in my yogurt. My liver was so busy filtering out all those harmful substances that it didn&#8217;t get around to breaking down my fat! I was also wrong on carbs. I thought they are all bad for you when you try to lose weight. Guess what – that&#8217;s not the case! You need carbs to make your body function or you will feel exhausted and tired. You even need fat to lose weight naturally! Sounds paradox, I know, but it is true.</p>
